Article: Own-Root vs Grafted Roses

Own-Root vs Grafted Roses

When choosing roses for your garden, one important detail can make a big difference: is the rose own-root or grafted? At Kate Roses, we specialize in own-root roses for a reason. But what does that actually mean, and why should it matter to you?

Let’s break down the difference and help you choose the right rose for your garden.

What Is a Grafted Rose?

Grafted roses are created by joining two different plants into one. The roots come from a vigorous variety called the rootstock, and the top part—the one that produces blooms—is from a different rose, known as the scion.

This method is commonly used in large-scale production and in regions with extremely cold winters. Grafted roses often grow quickly and are widely available.

However, they come with some drawbacks. If the graft union (where the two parts are joined) is damaged, the plant may revert to the rootstock variety, losing the bloom you wanted. Grafted roses can also send up unwanted growth called suckers, which compete with the main plant. And if stressed by poor soil, heat, or pruning, they may not recover as well.

What Is an Own-Root Rose?

Own-root roses are grown from cuttings of the original plant, meaning the entire rose—top to bottom—is one single variety growing on its own roots.

This gives them several advantages. They are more stable and don’t suffer from graft failure or sucker problems. If they get damaged, they grow back true to type. Over time, they tend to be longer-lived, stronger, and more resilient.

While they may take a little longer to establish in the first year, they more than make up for it with long-term health and reliability.

Why Kate Roses Only Sells Own-Root Roses

We believe your roses should be beautiful and dependable. That’s why every rose we grow is:

  • Own-root for long-term strength and stability

  • Virus-free and pesticide-free

  • Naturally resilient and grown in the USA

  • Hand-selected for heat tolerance and repeat blooming

In warm regions like California, own-root roses outperform grafted ones. They thrive in the sun, bounce back from stress, and require less maintenance in the long run. Whether you’re planting a romantic Masora, a dreamy Rainy Blue, or a statement-maker like Kong Meng, choosing own-root gives your garden a stronger foundation.
